Chris Curtin joins the board of Child & Family Connections

I am honored to join the non-profit board of Child & Family Connections. As the lead agency for community-based care in Palm Beach County, Child & Family Connections (CFC) is charged with management of the organization, enhancement, coordination, and oversight of foster care and related services to ensure the safety, well-being and security of its children and families. CFC was established in 2001 as a 501c3 corporation in response to the Florida Legislature’s mandate that child welfare services be privatized (Section 409.1617, Florida Statutes) and is responsible for approximately 1600 children in Palm Beach County.

In addition, CFC and the non-profit board has partnered with Studio E Gallery on PGA Blvd and invites you to help more than 60 local teens in foster care have a happier holiday season at an after-hour benefit on December 16th from 5:30-7:00 PM. Included are seasonal appetizers, a complimentary drink and the opportunity to view and purchase the beautiful artworks on display at Studio E Gallery. Kids in Palm Beach County, FL need donated space for 1800 Toys…

Child and Family Connections (CFC) in conjunction with Foster Adoptive Parent Association (FAPA), is in need of donated storage space for approximately 1,800 toys for the children our two organizations serve. We are both participating in this year’s Toys for Tots program, with toys being disseminated shortly after Thanksgiving with final toy pickup’s slated for Friday, December 24th at the latest.
The process works by our sorting the toys and then notifying case managers and foster parents of their availability. They then come to the facility to pick up the toys. We have caseworkers coming from The Glades, Delray and Riviera Beach and foster parents located throughout the county so are in need of a relatively central (West Palm Beach) location for this.
We need a secured facility with power/a.c. available and preferably 24-hour access if possible as our volunteers sort through these toys on very irregular schedules. Square footage should be approximately 1,500 to 2,000 (or more) in order to accommodate all our toys and sorting areas.
A brief history: We used to use the other side of our building on Okeechobee Blvd. in West Palm Beach and ironically it is still vacant with ample room. Unfortunately, we have new landlords who are attempting to lease out this empty space and are not going to allow us to use it this year. As you can see, we could be in a bit of a pickle…!
If you can pass this information on to people you think could help us, it would be greatly appreciated. We will be sure to give proper credit (i.e. attribution in news releases, newsletter mention, Facebook, etc.) to the donor from CFC as well as FAPA.

Being on a Non-Profit Board: “Give, Get or Work”

Like me, you probably serve on a few non-profit boards. Giving of yourself can be very rewarding, but sometimes frustrating in the non-profit arena. A key difference between your business and the non-profit is that when you serve a client, the profits that are subsequently generated increase resources. When the non-profit serves a client, resources typically are consumed and must be replenished by outside sources.

When I took my first non-profit board seat many years ago, I thought I was there to share my insight and knowledge ;).  I slowly learned that guidance, strategy and fiduciary duty are important, but there are three critical roles that need to be played.

You either: Give Money, Raise Money and/or Do Critical Work

In a new or undercapitalized non-profit, these areas are magnified. As you look at your board make-up, slot all the members (including yourself) into each category. My guess is that there is some dead wood who do none of the three. Their main job is to “pontificate”. They need to go unless their insights rival Peter Drucker’s. If you are lucky, you have an even mix of all three areas. If you are really lucky, you have a few superstars who fall into 2 or 3 of the categories.

Look for balance in the board makeup. Too many of one or not enough of any of the three board member types can lead to problems. Too many pontificators will lead to failure and ruin.
